|The ISOPHOT 170 μm Serendipity Survey II. The catalog of optically identified galaxies%|
The ISOPHOT Serendipity Sky Survey strip-scanning measurements covering≈15% of the far-infrared (FIR) sky at 170 μm were searched forcompact sources associated with optically identified galaxies. CompactSerendipity Survey sources with a high signal-to-noise ratio in at leasttwo ISOPHOT C200 detector pixels were selected that have a positionalassociation with a galaxy identification in the NED and/or Simbaddatabases and a galaxy counterpart visible on the Digitized Sky Surveyplates. A catalog with 170 μm fluxes for more than 1900 galaxies hasbeen established, 200 of which were measured several times. The faintest170 μm fluxes reach values just below 0.5 Jy, while the brightest,already somewhat extended galaxies have fluxes up to ≈600 Jy. For thevast majority of listed galaxies, the 170 μm fluxes were measured forthe first time. While most of the galaxies are spirals, about 70 of thesources are classified as ellipticals or lenticulars. |The PSCz catalogue|
We present the catalogue, mask, redshift data and selection function forthe PSCz survey of 15411 IRAS galaxies across 84per cent of the sky.Most of the IRAS data are taken from the Point Source Catalog, but thishas been supplemented and corrected in various ways to improve thecompleteness and uniformity. We quantify the known imperfections in thecatalogue, and we assess the overall uniformity, completeness and dataquality. We find that overall the catalogue is complete and uniform towithin a few per cent at high latitudes and 10per cent at low latitudes.Ancillary information, access details, guidelines and caveats for usingthe catalogue are given.
|Arcsecond Positions of UGC Galaxies|
We present accurate B1950 and J2000 positions for all confirmed galaxiesin the Uppsala General Catalog (UGC). The positions were measuredvisually from Digitized Sky Survey images with rms uncertaintiesσ<=[(1.2")2+(θ/100)2]1/2,where θ is the major-axis diameter. We compared each galaxymeasured with the original UGC description to ensure high reliability.The full position list is available in the electronic version only.
|The Updated Zwicky Catalog (UZC)|
The Zwicky Catalog of galaxies (ZC), with m_Zw<=15.5, has been thebasis for the Center for Astrophysics (CfA) redshift surveys. To date,analyses of the ZC and redshift surveys based on it have relied onheterogeneous sets of galaxy coordinates and redshifts. Here we correctsome of the inadequacies of previous catalogs by providing (1)coordinates with <~2" errors for all of the 19,369 catalog galaxies,(2) homogeneously estimated redshifts for the majority (98%) of the datataken at the CfA (14,632 spectra), and (3) an estimate of the remaining``blunder'' rate for both the CfA redshifts and for those compiled fromthe literature. For the reanalyzed CfA data we include a calibrated,uniformly determined error and an indication of the presence of emissionlines in each spectrum. We provide redshifts for 7257 galaxies in theCfA2 redshift survey not previously published; for another 5625 CfAredshifts we list the remeasured or uniformly rereduced value. Among ournew measurements, 1807 are members of UZC ``multiplets'' associated withthe original Zwicky catalog position in the coordinate range where thecatalog is 98% complete. These multiplets provide new candidates forexamination of tidal interactions among galaxies. All of the newredshifts correspond to UZC galaxies with properties recorded in the CfAredshift compilation known as ZCAT. About 1000 of our new measurementswere motivated either by inadequate signal-to-noise in the originalspectrum or by an ambiguous identification of the galaxy associated witha ZCAT redshift. The redshift catalog we include here is ~96% completeto m_Zw<=15.5 and ~98% complete (12,925 galaxies out of a total of13,150) for the right ascension ranges 20^h>=alpha_1950<=4^h and8^h>=alpha_1950<=17^h and declination range-2.5d<=delta_1950<=50^deg. This more complete region includes allof the CfA2 survey as analyzed to date. The Great Wall structurepersists throughout the northern survey region. |21-cm Line Observations of Galaxies in the Zone of Avoidance|
We present HI 21-cm line observations of 543 galaxies at low galacticlatitude in the Galactic Anticenter region of the Zone of Avoidance(4(h) <=alpha <= 8(h) , 0arcdeg <=delta <= 37arcdeg ). Thesample comprises 147 catalogued objects (from UGC, CGCG, MCG, and IRAS)still missing a redshift measurement and a list of 369 objects selectedfrom an extensive optical compilation of galaxy candidates in this area.The spectra were acquired using the 305-m Arecibo telescope and cover avelocity range from -350 to +13800 km s(-1) at a resolution of about 16km s(-1) . 196 galaxies were detected, 59 of the catalogued ones and 137from the optical compilation. The HI derived properties are presented,as is a discussion regarding the redshift distribution in this region.Our data seems to be consistent with a link across the Zone of Avoidancebetween the Pisces-Perseus supercluster and Abell 569.

|Search and redshift survey for IRAS galaxies behind the Northern Milky Way|
We made a search for IRAS galaxies behind the Northern Milky Way byinfrared selection using IRAS Point Source Catalog and visual inspectionon POSS (Palomar Observatory Sky Survey) paper prints, and carried out aredshift survey of the identified objects. This paper presents a catalogof 649 IRAS galaxies with f_60_>=0.6 Jy between l=150deg and 240degat |b|<=15deg , which contains 254 newly identified galaxies and 188newly measured radial velocities. Due to galactic extinction, our sampleis a lower limit sample of the flux limited sample of IRAS galaxies, butit can give some information on the distribution of galaxies in theregion perpendicular to the Supergalactic Plane. We confirm two regionswith enhanced density at l=~160deg , cz=~5000 km/s and l=~190deg ,cz=~5000 km/s and at least two possible voids.
|Identifying galaxies in the zone of avoidance|
A set of IR color criteria was applied to sources in the IRAS PointSource Catalog at low Galactic latitudes in order to select candidategalaxies. A total of 371 of the selected sources within a Galacticlatitude range (b) = 2-16 deg were searched for H I with the Arecibo 305m radio telescope. Twenty-six percent (97) were detected, including 36galaxies previously known only as IRAS sources. The H I spectra of thedetected galaxies are presented together with their observed redshiftsand velocity widths.
|H I survey of face-on galaxies - The frequency of distortions in H I disks|
The full results of an H I survey of face-on galaxies are presented andit is shown that narrow H I profiles are rare in normal spiral galaxies.This is due in part to the wider-than-expected range of the integraldispersion and in part to the frequent occurrence of large-scaledistortions in the H I disk. These factors reduce the number of galaxieswith half-power widths less than 30 km/s to about 24 percent of thosethat would occur if galaxies generally had quiescent, coplanar H Idisks. Two useful subsets may be drawn from this study of 212 face-ongalaxies with axial ratios greater than 0.87. Fifty-two spirals of allmorphological types have half-power widths smaller than 100 km/s and maybe used for studies that benefit from a small velocity spread and anenhanced beam-filling factor. About 40 galaxies have velocity widthsmuch larger than expected and are of interest in studies of dynamicallypeculiar systems.
