Rotational velocities of A-type stars in the northern hemisphere. II. Measurement of v sin i
This work is the second part of the set of measurements of v sin i forA-type stars, begun by Royer et al. (\cite{Ror_02a}). Spectra of 249 B8to F2-type stars brighter than V=7 have been collected at Observatoirede Haute-Provence (OHP). Fourier transforms of several line profiles inthe range 4200-4600 Å are used to derive v sin i from thefrequency of the first zero. Statistical analysis of the sampleindicates that measurement error mainly depends on v sin i and thisrelative error of the rotational velocity is found to be about 5% onaverage. The systematic shift with respect to standard values fromSlettebak et al. (\cite{Slk_75}), previously found in the first paper,is here confirmed. Comparisons with data from the literature agree withour findings: v sin i values from Slettebak et al. are underestimatedand the relation between both scales follows a linear law ensuremath vsin inew = 1.03 v sin iold+7.7. Finally, thesedata are combined with those from the previous paper (Royer et al.\cite{Ror_02a}), together with the catalogue of Abt & Morrell(\cite{AbtMol95}). The resulting sample includes some 2150 stars withhomogenized rotational velocities. Based on observations made atObservatoire de Haute Provence (CNRS), France. Research Note Hipparcos photometry: The least variable stars
The data known as the Hipparcos Photometry obtained with the Hipparcossatellite have been investigated to find those stars which are leastvariable. Such stars are excellent candidates to serve as standards forphotometric systems. Their spectral types suggest in which parts of theHR diagrams stars are most constant. In some cases these values stronglyindicate that previous ground based studies claiming photometricvariability are incorrect or that the level of stellar activity haschanged. Absolute declinations with the photoelectric astrolabe at Calern Observatory (OCA)
A regular observational programme with a photoelectric astrolabe havebeen performed at ``Observatoire du Calern" (Observatoire de laCôte d'Azur, OCA, phi = +43() o44′55.011″; lambda =-0() h27() m42.44() s, Calern, Caussols, France) for the last twentyyears. It has been almost fully automatized between 1984 and 1987. Since1988 the photoelectric astrolabe was used without any modification. Inaddition to determining the daily orientation of the local vertical, theyearly analysis of the residuals permits to derive corrections to theused star catalogue \cite[(Vigouroux et al. 1992)]{vig92}. A globalreduction method was applied for the ASPHO observations. The new form ofthe equations \cite[(Martin & Leister 1997)]{mar97} give us thepossibility of using the entire set of the observing program using datataken at two zenith distances (30() o and 45() o). The program containsabout 41648 stars' transits of 269 different stars taken at``Observatoire du Calern" (OCA). The reduction was based on theHIPPARCOS system. We discuss the possibility of computing absolutedeclinations through stars belonging simultaneously to the 30() o and45() o zenith distances programmes. The absolute declination correctionswere determined for 185 stars with precision of 0.027arcsec and thevalue of the determined equator correction is -0.018arcsec +/-0.005arcsec . The instrumental effects were also determined. The meanepoch is 1995.29. The gamma Doradus-type variable 9 Aurigae: results from a multi-site campaign
We present the results of a multi-longitude coordinated photometriccampaign on the gamma Dor variable 9 Aur. Three frequencies can bedetermined from the data (f_1=0.7948, f_3=0.7679, f_5=0.3429 d^-1) twoof them have already been recognized in past seasons while the thirdfrequency is reported for the first time. Analysis shows that the thirdwas `turned off' or present with an amplitude below the limits ofdetection during previous observing seasons. This evidence, togetherwith consistent amplitude changes in the two previously recognizedsignals, suggests that the stellar structure responsible for 9 Aur'svariability is extremely dynamic. Intermediate-resolution spectra andCORAVEL radial velocities collected simultaneously show variability ontime-scales commensurable with the photometry. The only sensibleexplanation appears to be a non-radial pulsation (NRP) model. However,results obtained reveal a number of features that deviate from classicalNRP behaviour. Such features are emphasized in this paper in support ofthe future development of a specific NRP model - a model which has yetto be elucidated for gamma Dor-type variables.

9 Aurigae: strong evidence for non-radial pulsations
We present further photometric observations of the unusual F0 V star 9Aurigae and present evidence that this star's radial velocity,spectroscopic line widths and line depths are also variable with thesame frequencies as the photometric data (f_1~=0.795 and f_2~=0.345d^-1). The phases of these sinusoids are stable over time-scales oflonger than one year, though the amplitudes can vary, making theprediction of photometric behaviour impossible. Given that a variety ofother explanations have already been discounted (e.g. interactions witha close companion, the existence of a lumpy, orbiting ring of dust, orstar spots) and that these variations occur on time-scales an order ofmagnitude slower than the fundamental radial pulsation period, we havevery strong evidence that 9 Aurigae exhibits non-radial g-modepulsations. Since the power spectrum of the radial velocity data showsfrequency f_2 but does not clearly show f_1, the present data suggestthat f_2 is associated with a low-degree spherical harmonic L=1 or 2),while f_1 is associated with a higher degree harmonic. 9 Aurigae, alongwith such stars as gamma Doradus, HD 224638, HD 224945, and HD 164615,appears to constitute a new class of pulsating variables. These starsare to be found at or beyond the cool edge of the Cepheid instabilitystrip in the HR Diagram. Prior to this, only much hotter stars have beenshown to exhibit non-radial g-modes.

We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star,when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

The sign of four : a new class of cool non-radially pulsating stars ?
In this paper we discuss four early F-type variable stars whose periodsare an order of magnitude slower than known pulsators of comparableluminosity. They cannot be stars undergoing simple radial pulsations.For one or more of these stars we can discount the possibility that thevariability is due to rotational modulation of star spots, interactionswith (or tidal distortions by) a close companion, or obscuration by arotating lumpy ring of dust orbiting the star. They are certainly noteclipsing binaries. The only possibility left seems to be non-radialpulsations, though this explanation involves difficulties of its own. Ifthey are indeed pulsating stars exhibiting non- radial gravity modes,they would be the first stars on the cool side of the Cepheidinstability strip in the Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram to be soidentified.

The Sirius supercluster
Photometric data on the chemical composition of 927 A stars in the UrsaMajor stream, called the Sirius supercluster, were used to estimate theage and place of formation of the objects. The stars studied are in thesolar neighborhood and have been observed to be co-moving in a velocityellipsoid with a (U, V) velocity of 10.3 km/sec and concentrated in aspatial volume less than 10 pc across. The Stromgren and Geneva systemphotometric data show that the supercluster is homogeneous in chemicalcontent, although the value of the forbidden Fe/H ratio could not beprecisely determined. The supercluster age is projected to be from260-620 Myr, with the origin having been in the Carina spiral arm of theGalaxy.

Absolute luminosity calibration of Stroemgren's 'late group'
A statistical parallax method based on the principle of maximumlikelihood is used to calibrate absolute luminosities for samples ofcooler stars constituting the 'late group' defined by Stromgren (1966).The samples examined include 415 stars of all luminosity classes and asubset comprising 86 main-sequence stars. Linear calibration relationsinvolving the Stromgren beta, (b-y), and bracketted c1 indices arederived which yield mean absolute magnitudes with an accuracy of 0.09magnitude for the overall sample and 0.13 magnitude for themain-sequence subsample. Several second-order relations are considered,and the results are compared with Crawford's (1975) calibrations as wellas with mean absolute magnitudes obtained from trigonometric parallaxes.The possible effect of interstellar absorption on the calibrationrelations is also investigated.
