Near-infrared observations of galaxies in Pisces-Perseus. V. On the origin of bulges
We investigate the scaling relations of bulge and disk structuralparameters for a sample of 108 disk galaxies. Structural parameters ofindividual galaxies are obtained from two-dimensional bulge/diskdecomposition of their H-band surface brightness distributions. Bulgesare modelled with a generalized exponential (Sérsic) withvariable integer shape index n. We find that bulge effectivescalelengths reB and luminosity MBincrease with increasing n, but disk properties are independent of bulgeshape. As Hubble type T increases, bulges become less luminous and theirmean effective surface brightness <μeB>gets fainter; disk <μeD> shows a similar, but much weaker, trend. When bulge parameters(<μeB>, reB,MB) are compared with disk ones(<μeD>, reD,MD), they are tightly correlated for n=1 bulges. Thecorrelations gradually worsen with increasing n such that n=4 bulgesappear virtually independent of their disks. The Kormendy relation,<μeB> vs. reB, isshown to depend on bulge shape n; the two parameters are tightlycorrelated in n=4 bulges (r=0.8), and increasingly less so as ndecreases; disk <μeD> andreD are well correlated (r=0.7). Bulge-to-disksize ratios reB/reD areindependent of Hubble type, but smaller for exponential bulges; the meanreB/reD for n=1 bulges is 4times smaller than that for n=4, with a spread which is 9 times smaller.Strongly barred SB galaxies with exponential bulges are more luminousthan their unbarred counterparts. Exponential bulges appear to beclosely related to their underlying disks, while bulges with higher nvalues are less so; n=4 bulges and their disks apparently have norelation. We interpret our results as being most consistent with asecular evolutionary scenario, in which dissipative processes in thedisk are responsible for building up the bulges in most spirals.Based on observations at the TIRGO, NOT, and VATT telescopes. Physical Coupling of Kazarian Galaxies with Surrounding Galaxies
Results from a statistical study of Kazarian galaxies and the objectssurrounding them are presented. It is shown that: (1) the sample ofKazarian galaxies up to 16m.0 is complete. (2) Roughly 35.7% of theKazarian galaxies are members of clusters, 14.0% of groups, and 13.6% ofbinary systems, while 36.7% are single galaxies. (3) Of the 580 Kazariangalaxies, roughly 61.2% are infrared, 8.8% radio, and 2.8% x-raysources. (4) The relative numbers of Kazarian galaxies for completesamples of I, R, and X in the different groups are systematically higherthan the corresponding numbers for samples of all Kazarian galaxies.

Detection of a thick disk in the edge-on low surface brightness galaxy ESO 342-G017. I. VLT Photometry in V and R bands
We report the detection of a thick disk in the edge-on, low surfacebrightness (LSB), late-type spiral ESO 342-G017, based on ultra-deepimages in the V and R bands obtained with the VLT Test Camera duringScience Verification on UT1. All steps in the reduction procedure arefully described, which, together with an extensive analysis ofsystematic and statistic uncertainties, has resulted in surfacebrightness photometry that is reliable for the detection of faintextended structure to a level of V = 27.5 and R = 28.5 mag/sq arcsec. The faint light apparent in these deep images is well-modeled by a thickexponential disk with an intrinsic scale height about 2.5 times that ofthe thin disk, and a comparable or somewhat larger scale length.Deprojection including the effects of inclination and convolution withthe PSF allow us to estimate that the thick disk contributes 20-40% ofthe total (old) stellar disk luminosity of ESO 342-G017. To ourknowledge, this is the first detection of a thick disk in an LSB galaxy, which are generally thought to be rather unevolved compared to highersurface brightness galaxies. Based on observations collected at theEuropean Southern Observatory, Paranal, Chile (VLT-UT1 ScienceVerification Program).

Arcsecond Positions of UGC Galaxies
We present accurate B1950 and J2000 positions for all confirmed galaxiesin the Uppsala General Catalog (UGC). The positions were measuredvisually from Digitized Sky Survey images with rms uncertaintiesσ<=[(1.2")2+(θ/100)2]1/2,where θ is the major-axis diameter. We compared each galaxymeasured with the original UGC description to ensure high reliability. The full position list is available in the electronic version only.

Near-infrared observations of galaxies in Pisces-Perseus. I. vec H-band surface photometry of 174 spiral
We present near-infrared, H-band (1.65 $() μm), surface photometry of174 spiral galaxies in the area of the Pisces-Perseus supercluster. Theimages, acquired with the ARNICA camera mounted on various telescopes, are used to derive radial profiles of surface brightness, ellipticities, and position angles, together with global parameters such as H-bandmagnitudes and diameters Radial profiles in tabular form and images FITSfiles are also available upon request from gmorio@arcetri.astro.it.}.The mean relation between H-band isophotal diameter D_{21.5} and theB-band D25 implies a B-H color of the outer disk bluer than3.5; moreover, D_{21.5}/D25 depends on (global) color andabsolute luminosity. The correlations among the various photometricparameters suggest a ratio between isophotal radius D_{21.5}/2 and diskscale length of ~ m3.5 and a mean disk central brightness ~ meq 17.5H-mag arcsec^{-2}. We confirm the trend of the concentration indexC31$ with absolute luminosity and, to a lesser degree, withmorphological type. We also assess the influence of non-axisymmetricstructures on the radial profiles and on the derived parameters. Basedon observations at the TIRGO, NOT, and VATT telescopes. Kinematics of the local universe. VII. New 21-cm line measurements of 2112 galaxies
This paper presents 2112 new 21-cm neutral hydrogen line measurementscarried out with the meridian transit Nan\c cay radiotelescope. Amongthese data we give also 213 new radial velocities which complement thoselisted in three previous papers of this series. These new measurements, together with the HI data collected in LEDA, put to 6 700 the number ofgalaxies with 21-cm line width, radial velocity, and apparent diameterin the so-called KLUN sample. Morphological classification of new galaxies with a UV excess
The results of a morphological classification of 580 galaxies with a UVexcess, included in the lists in [M. A. Kazarian, Astrofizika,15, 5(1979); ibid.,15, 193 (1979); M. A. Kazarian and É. S. Kazarian,ibid.,16, 17 (1980); ibid.,18, 512 (1982); ibid.,19, 213 (1983)], arepresented. For this we have developed a set of symbols, using the typesE, S, and Ir introduced by Hubble, as well as symbols introduced byother authors and us. This set enabled us to make the morphologicalclassification. Direct photographs obtained on the 2.6-m and 6-mtelescopes were used to classify 141 of the galaxies (over 24%), whilePalomar Atlas charts were used for the remaining 439 galaxies. Thesegalaxies were divided into two groups based on classificationconditions, and data on each group are given in Tables 1 and 2,respectively. The results for each group, given in Table 3, show thatwith the transition from early types, such as C and E, to later types, such as S and Ir, the relative number of galaxies going into one group(Table 1), in which the classification was based on direct photographs, increases in comparison with the number going into the other group(Table 2).

A survey of the Pisces-Perseus supercluster. VI - The declination zone +15.5 deg to 21.5 deg
New results are presented of Arecibo observations in the 21 cm line of765 galaxies with declinations between 15.5 deg and 21.5 deg, in thePisces-Perseus supercluster zone. If considered independently on theneighboring parts of sky, this region, to the South of the superclusterridge, shows significantly less evidence of structure on large scales inexcess of 30 Mpc, contrasting substantially with the characteristics ofthe declination zones immediately to the North.

Molecular gas in nearby galaxies. II - The data
The study reports observations of (C-12)O J = 1-0 emission from 50nearby spiral galaxies. This is part of a distance-limited survey ofnearby systems which are not strongly interacting with their neighbors. The observations were performed during December 1988 and March 1990using the NRAO 12-m telescope at Kitt Peak with the 3-mm SIS receiversand the 256-channel x 2-MHz spectrometers.

Bayesian deconvolution in optical astronomy
Bayesian methods and spatial stochastic processes are used here in thedeconvolution of images of galaxies. Under very simple but realisticprior assumptions about the true underlying image of a galaxy theBayesian framework is put to work. The method is tested in CCD images ofextragalactic objects of different morphological types and an analysisof the deconvolutions obtained is performed emphasizing the comparisonwith other observational results.

The far-infrared properties of the CfA galaxy sample. I - The catalog
IRAS flux densities are presented for all galaxies in the Center forAstrophysics magnitude-limited sample (mB not greater than 14.5)detected in the IRAS Faint Source Survey (FSS), a total of 1544galaxies. The detection rate in the FSS is slightly larger than in thePSC for the long-wavelength 60- and 100-micron bands, but improves by afactor of about 3 or more for the short wavelength 12- and 25-micronbands. This optically selected sample consists of galaxies which are, onaverage, much less IR-active than galaxies in IR-selected samples. Itpossesses accurate and complete redshift, morphological, and magnitudeinformation, along with observations at other wavelengths.

Periodicities in galaxy redshifts
Using new data for unassociated galaxies with wide H I profiles andvalues of period and solar motion predicted by Tifft and Cocke (1984), aperiodicity has been found which is significant at the conventional 5percent level. Together with Tifft's work on galaxy pairs and smallgroups, this result appears to provide evidence in favor of thehypothesis that measured galaxy redshifts occur in steps of a littlemore than 72 km/s or a simple multiple of this period.

Spectral observations of new galaxies with ultraviolet excess.
The results are given of spectral observations of 42 galaxies withultraviolet excess. Spectra were obtained with the 6-m telescope of theSpecial Astrophysical Observatory of the USSR Academy of Sciences withUAGS the spectrograph in conjunction with a scanner. Emission lines areobserved in the spectra of 27 galaxies; one object, No. 82, exhibits thefeatures of Seyfert galaxies. In the spectrum of galaxy No. 188 linesare not observed in the fairly wide wavelength interval 3550-7130 A.

Sense of rotation in 109 spirals, and the leading arms in the interacting galaxies NGC 3786 and NGC 5426
From analysis of 132 spiral galaxies, designed to determine the sense ofwinding of the arms, 107 are reliably found to have trailing arms, buttwo others, NGC 3786 (paired with the spiral NGC 3788) and NGC 5426(paired with NGC 5427), have leading arms. The sample of galaxies havinga well-established sense of spiral rotation now totals 190; the arms areleading in only four of these, all objects interacting dynamically withcompanion galaxies. A mechanism that might have induced such leadingspiral patterns is suggested and discussed.

A survey of galaxy redshifts. IV - The data
The complete list of the best available radial velocities for the 2401galaxies in the merged Zwicky-Nilson catalog brighter than 14.5mz and with b (II) above +40 deg or below -30 deg ispresented. Almost 60 percent of the redshifts are from the CfA surveyand are accurate to typically 35 km/s.
