|The ISOPHOT 170 μm Serendipity Survey II. The catalog of optically identified galaxies%|
The ISOPHOT Serendipity Sky Survey strip-scanning measurements covering≈15% of the far-infrared (FIR) sky at 170 μm were searched forcompact sources associated with optically identified galaxies. CompactSerendipity Survey sources with a high signal-to-noise ratio in at leasttwo ISOPHOT C200 detector pixels were selected that have a positionalassociation with a galaxy identification in the NED and/or Simbaddatabases and a galaxy counterpart visible on the Digitized Sky Surveyplates. A catalog with 170 μm fluxes for more than 1900 galaxies hasbeen established, 200 of which were measured several times. The faintest170 μm fluxes reach values just below 0.5 Jy, while the brightest,already somewhat extended galaxies have fluxes up to ≈600 Jy. For thevast majority of listed galaxies, the 170 μm fluxes were measured forthe first time. While most of the galaxies are spirals, about 70 of thesources are classified as ellipticals or lenticulars. |The Arizona-New Mexico Spectroscopic Survey of Galaxies. III. On Galaxy Populations|
We examine the population statistics for two samples of galaxies in thedirection of the Perseus supercluster. One sample, with N=258 galaxieshaving MB<=-19.52+5log(h) and vh<=8000 kms-1, is complete for those galaxies within the boundaries ofour survey region that have apparent magnitudes mp<=15.0in the Zwicky catalog. A more restrictive sample with N=177 galaxieshaving MB<=-20.00+5log(h) (with the same redshift range)is complete in both luminosity and volume. We derive the statistics forthe relative incidence of galaxies in the following spectroscopicclasses: (1) absorption line only, (2) collisionally-excited emissionlines only, (3) nuclear H II region, (4) starburst, (5) LINER, and (6)Seyfert 1.8-2.
|The Arizona-New Mexico Spectroscopic Survey of Galaxies. I. Data for the Western End of the Perseus Supercluster|
We present new optical spectroscopic data for 347 galaxies in the regionof the Perseus supercluster. The new data were obtained using theSteward Observatory 2.3 m telescope and cover the whole optical window.Included are redshifts (for 345 objects), absorption-line equivalentwidths, a continuum index measuring the 4000 Å break, andemission-line flux ratios. After 11 objects are rejected for being toofaint and redshifts for 26 objects are added from the literature, wearrive at a complete sample of 361 galaxies. The distribution ofredshifts for the whole sample is examined, and we show the relationshipof the continuum index to morphology.
|Arcsecond Positions of UGC Galaxies|
We present accurate B1950 and J2000 positions for all confirmed galaxiesin the Uppsala General Catalog (UGC). The positions were measuredvisually from Digitized Sky Survey images with rms uncertaintiesσ<=[(1.2")2+(θ/100)2]1/2,where θ is the major-axis diameter. We compared each galaxymeasured with the original UGC description to ensure high reliability.The full position list is available in the electronic version only.
|Near-infrared emission of neutral carbon from photon-dominated regions|
Detailed calculations are reported of the intensities of thenear-infrared lines of neutral carbon atoms at 985.0, 982.3, and 872.7nm emitted from dense clouds subjected to intense radiation fields.There is a small contribution to the excitation of the metastable levelsby electron impacts in the heated edge zones of the clouds but it isinsignificant compared to that from the recombination of the C(+) ionsproduced by photoionization. The lines observed in M42 and NGC 2024 canbe interpreted as arising in gas with densities in excess of 100,000/cucm and radiation fields with intensities between a thousand and amillion times the average interstellar field intensity. Radiativerecombination of C(+) ions may be an important source of the emissionlines detected in the planetary nebulae NGC 6270 and NGC 7027.
|A 21 CM survey of the Pisces-Perseus supercluster. I - The declination zone +27.5 to +33.5 degrees|
Neutral-hydrogen 21 cm line data for a sample of galaxies in the regionbounded by 22 h less than R.A. less than 04h, + 27 deg 30 arcmin Dec.less than + 33 deg 30 arcmin are presented as the first installment of asurvey of galaxies in the region of the Pisces-Perseus supercluster. Ofthe 415 galaxies observed in this strip with the Arecibo 305 mtelescope, 342 have been detached in the 21 cm line; another ten haveuseful upper limits to their H I content. The sample includes mostspiral, irregular, and dwarf galaxies larger than 1 arcmin; in selectedareas, spirals to a limiting magnitude of + 15.7 have been observed. Thevelocity distribution of the 511 galaxies with known redshift in thiszone deviates markedly from that expected for a similar sample ofrandomly placed objects. The region contains significant clustering inall three dimensions.
