|Kinematics of the local universe . XII. 21-cm line measurements of 586 galaxies with the new Nançay receiver|
This paper presents 586 new 21-cm neutral hydrogen line measurementscarried out with the FORT receiver of the meridian transit Nançayradiotelescope in the period July 2000-March 2003. This observationalprogramme is part of a larger project aiming at collecting an exhaustiveand magnitude-complete HI extragalactic catalogue for Tully-Fisherapplications. |A search for Low Surface Brightness galaxies in the near-infrared. III. Nançay H I line observations|
A total of 334 Low Surface Brightness galaxies detected in the 2MASSall-sky near-infrared survey have been observed in the 21 cm H I lineusing the Nançay telescope. All have a Ks-band meancentral surface brightness, measured within a 5'' radius, fainter than18 mag arcsec-2 and a Ks-band isophotal radius atthe 20 mag arcsec-2 level larger than 20''. |A search for Low Surface Brightness galaxies in the near-infrared. I. Selection of the sample|
A sample of about 3800 Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxies wasselected using the all-sky near-infrared (J, H and Ks-band)2MASS survey. The selected objects have a mean central surfacebrightness within a 5'' radius around their centre fainter than 18 magarcsec-2 in the Ks band, making them the lowestsurface brightness galaxies detected by 2MASS. A description is given ofthe relevant properties of the 2MASS survey and the LSB galaxy selectionprocedure, as well as of basic photometric properties of the selectedobjects. The latter properties are compared to those of other samples ofgalaxies, of both LSBs and ``classical'' high surface brightness (HSB)objects, which were selected in the optical. The 2MASS LSBs have aBT_c-KT colour which is on average 0.9 mag bluerthan that of HSBs from the NGC. The 2MASS sample does not appear tocontain a significant population of red objects.All tables and Figs. 2a-c are only available in electronic form athttp://www.edpsciences.org
|Spectroscopic Observations of Merging Galaxies|
In this paper we describe the spectroscopic and infrared properties of asample of 25 merging galaxy pairs, selected from the catalog of Arp& Madore, and we compare them with those observed in a similarsample of interacting galaxies (Donzelli & Pastoriza). It is notedthat mergers as well as interacting systems comprise a wide range ofspectral types, going from those corresponding to well-evolved stellarpopulations (older than 200 Myr) to those that show clear signatures ofH II regions with stellar populations younger than 8 Myr. However,merger galaxies show on average more excited spectra than interactingpairs, which could be attributed to lower gas metallicity. From theemission lines we also found that merging systems show on average higher(about a factor of 2) star formation rates than interacting galaxies.Classical diagnostic diagrams show that only three of 50 of the galaxies(6%) present some form of nuclear activity: two Seyfert galaxies and oneLINER. However, through a detailed analysis of the pure emission-linespectra, we conclude that this fraction may raise up to 23% of themergers if we consider that some galaxies host a low-luminosity activenucleus surrounded by strong star-forming regions. This latterassumption is also supported by the infrared colors of the galaxies.Regarding to the total infrared luminosities, the merging galaxies showon average an IR luminosity, log(Lir)=10.7, lower than thatof interacting systems, log(Lir)=10.9. We find that onlythree mergers of the sample (12%) can be classified as luminous infraredgalaxies, while this fraction increases to 24% in the interactingsample. Based on observations made at CASLEO. ComplejoAstronómico El Leoncito is operated under agreement between theConsejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicasde la República Argentina and the National Universities of LaPlata, Córdoba and San Juan.
|The Southern Sky Redshift Survey|
We report redshifts, magnitudes, and morphological classifications for5369 galaxies with m_B <= 15.5 and for 57 galaxies fainter than thislimit, in two regions covering a total of 1.70 sr in the southerncelestial hemisphere. The galaxy catalog is drawn primarily from thelist of nonstellar objects identified in the Hubble Space TelescopeGuide Star Catalog (GSC). The galaxies have positions accurate to ~1"and magnitudes with an rms scatter of ~0.3 mag. We compute magnitudes(m_SSRS2) from the relation between instrumental GSC magnitudes and thephotometry by Lauberts & Valentijn. From a comparison with CCDphotometry, we find that our system is homogeneous across the sky andcorresponds to magnitudes measured at the isophotal level ~26 magarcsec^-2. The precision of the radial velocities is ~40 km s^-1, andthe redshift survey is more than 99% complete to the m_SSRS2 = 15.5 maglimit. This sample is in the direction opposite that of the CfA2; incombination the two surveys provide an important database for studies ofthe properties of galaxies and their large-scale distribution in thenearby universe. |Southern Sky Redshift Survey - The catalog|
The catalog of radial velocities for galaxies which comprise thediameter-limited sample of the Southern Sky Redshift Survey ispresented. It consolidates the data of observations carried out at theLas Campanas Observatory, Observatorio Nacional, and South AfricanAstronomical Observatory. The criteria used for the sample selection aredescribed, as well as the observational procedures and the techniqueutilized to obtain the final radial velocities. The intercomparisonbetween radial velocity measurements from different telescopes indicatesthat the final data base is fairly homogeneous with a typical error ofabout 40 km/s. The sample is at present 90 percent complete, and themissing galaxies are predominantly objects with very low surfacebrightness for which it is very difficult to obtain optical redshifts.
|A southern redshift survey. I - Accurate redshifts for 500 galaxies observed at SAAO|
Radial velocities are presented for about 500 galaxies observed with anintensified Reticon photon-counting detector attached to the 1.9 mtelescope at the Sutherland field station of SAAO. The velocities weredetermined by cross correlation with standard velocity templates, fromthe measured wavelengths of emission lines, or from both techniques,with spectra covering the wavelength range from 3700 to 5400 A. Thefinal velocities appear to have the same zero point as H I radiovelocities, and have standard deviations of the order of 35 km/s, thoughcross-correlation velocities on their own may have significantly largererrors.
